With the possible exception of the singularity engine, the standard window is the most complicated structure on the station. It is also the most likely thing to break when someone fucks up.
You will see a lot of people who do a sloppy job of window repair: just walling over it, building panes outside of the grille rather than on the same tile, building solid glass windows instead of grilles and panes. This guide will tell you, step by step, how to repair windows the RIGHT way.
Materials Needed
1. Reinforced glass
--> Glass + metal rods
2. Metal rods
3. Screwdriver
4. Crowbar
5. Wirecutters
6. Welding tool
#1: Clear the work zone.
-Remaining grilles or grille pieces must be removed. Cut them into rods with wirecutters.
-Glass fragments should be melted back into glass sheets with a welding tool.
#2: Repair surrounding infrastructure.
-If the plating under the window is damaged, smooth it with a welding tool.
-If the plating is gone and there is a breach, construct scaffolding (metal rods) then new plating (metal sheets).
#3: Become the window; enter the window.
-Step into the center of the window tile you are repairing. This is the most important step.
#4: Construct glass panes. Rotate into place and secure, leaving one loose.
-Construct the appropriate number of reinforced glass panes to replace all the broken panes.
-Most panes will position themselves automatically. If not, right click --> rotate window to position them.
-To secure a pane in place, first use your screwdriver, then your crowbar, then your screwdriver again. Same to detach.
-Leave one pane rotated out of position and unsecured so that you can get out. This will be secured later.
#5: Construct the grille.*
-Build the grille out of metal rods. The grille will automatically be attached, no further assembly necessary.
#6: Step out of the window.
-This is why we left one pane out of place earlier. Step out through the missing pane.
#7: Rotate and secure the final pane into place.
-Right click --> rotate window on the last pane. It will be on top of another pane, so you may have to try both
before you get the one that is still loose.
-Secure the final pane into place (see step #4).
Done. If you have followed these directions correctly, you will have built a perfect copy of the original window.
Long lines of windows may be built one tile at a time using this same method. More advanced window engineers may choose to build and secure all the glass panes in the row all at once, leaving an opening at one end, then lay the grilles all at once starting from the closed end. Remember, if you fuck up, you WILL need to cut apart the grille to get back into the tile, but it shouldn't be necessary to break any window panes as long as you unsecure them and rotate them sideways rather than dragging them into a different tile. Window panes cannot be pushed into a tile containing other window panes; they have to be constructed there in order to make them overlap.
*Engineering cyborgs are unable to build metal grilles. Either get a human to make the grille after all the glass is in place, or substitute bare wall girders for the grille.
