I recall around the time I started playing there was a Botanist who was in Botany and a Scientist ran in; stayed for 5 seconds and ran out. Botanist proceeds to break all the windows in Botany and emptied the botany lockers into a disposal without being seen by anyone, and calls security and tells them the Scientist did it. Scientist gets arrested for breaking and entering, theft, and trespassing. Scientist serves his time, returns to R&D. Botanist breaks in. Botanist picks up an air tank and stands near the Scientist and starts killing himself; but not before uttering "Help, Scientist from earlier killing me in RD!!". Scientist refutes the claims, security arrives and the Scientist is permabrigged anyway. Botanist gets cloned. Scientist keeps calling security shitcurity the rest of the round. 1. Security should have checked the air tank for the botanist's prints, the scientist's prints. Should have ALSO noticed the scientist would have NO blood on him. 2. The faggot botanist was hopefully banned for a good long time.

Another thing they should of questioned is why was the botanist in the R&D in the first place. If they noticed that he broke in then they should have assumed that the botanist started the fight in the first place.
Not sure if they did relies that he broke in and even if they did if it would affect if the scientist gets perma'd or not but it should have been something they should have looked into.
Officer: "Why were you in science in the first place."
Botanist: "I wanted to tell the scientist that I feel sorry he was arrested for the evil crimes he did against me earlier. But the glass was in the way so I had to break it. I also wanted to give him a hug and all of a sudden he attacks me and tells me he is an evil syndi overlord."
Officer: "Sounds totally legit."

I recall the first thing he did was break in through maintenance to the old empty canister and air scrubber room south of science and then proceeded to hack the door to get into the main R&D hallway. He then tailgated his way into the R&D room which was the location of the scientist.

I'm not sure how hard it can be to be a proper Officer for some people.
If you only have hear-say evidence on a crime, keep a note on it and look for any proof. If you can find proof or evidence that the crime was indeed committed then feel free to act on it. If you can't find any further evidence on the crime, then keep your note and watch out for any future crimes this dude may commit or be blamed for. You can probably go straight to arrest mode if the person accusing another of a crime is a reliable Head of Staff or a member of Security. Arresting and Security records can be useful though most won't use the records.
The Detective is useful, despite his scanner's decision to be a useless piece of shit in most situations (could this be changed), so try to remember to use his scanner as not everyone is armed with gloves and even then fibers may appear.
Don't imprison people for unnecessary times and use your head (You aren't a mindless drone who has no responsibility or control over his actions).
You're also expected to keep as many players as possible in the round, while acting as a counter to the antagonists present. Power/Metagaming majorly looks pretty shit to be honest, but it's a thing of the job for some people. Just don't be so shit that the players at the end of the round hate you, if you haven't done a bad job and some people are hating you then tell them to rightfully fuck off and go circlejerk each other somewhere else.

Another thing adding to Necros list just because someone is a certain job does not always mean they are going to act a certain way according to law. I've have seen heads break into armory and I've had to arrest officers for beating and killing prisoners. I've seen assistants and clowns fight off syndies and save the station, its the person controlling them what matters not the job.(but no matter what the mime is shit and you should kill on sight)
That said also don't taze, stripe, and attempt to rape a clown if they spawn on arrivals shuttle.(I've had this happen to me before)

There should be some inherent trust to the Heads of Staff and Security. I absolutely hate the differences one can face when they are using a stable name and when they're on random name. Every round is a new one, you talking about how this dude's bad or good from previous rounds is shit stuff.
Shame that it's a pretty constant thing and the people who do do it most likely won't cut it out.

I agree there should be trust for other officer and generally heads unless they prove otherwise. I never mentioned anything about previous rounds I'm just saying that you shouldn't automatically assume that assistants are going to cause trouble just because they choose the assistant job. Everyone plays the same jobs differently.
An example of this being one time when I was playing engineer I had the Hos break into engineering cuff me and drag me all the way to sec to stripe me. Did I do anything wrong, the answer to that is no but because he saw other engineers hack into place on some other occasion then that must mean I did it as well because I'm playing the same job as them.

The metagrudging bit was just something I've observed that used to happen occasionally, just brought it up. Confusion and paranoia are key parts of this game, if you happen to get brigged instead of someone else who actually did the crime, chances are you should try actually convincing them, not screaming "SHITCURITY" like most people do.

It seems that there is a new law made by everyone with a tazer, stun baton, or flash that anyone thats shooting a paintball gun at escape is arrest-able. I find this quite assuming.

I don’t think that a lawyer is powerless. It’s just, seeing the political atmosphere today; it seems logical to just secure your own self, rather than fighting. But, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t people who are working for change. I am myself in the middle of looking for Bar Review Courses for my Bar exams. Law gives everyone equal powers, but to use them you have to fight a little.
