From the imposed break from FPS by DFD, I have just been reading up on the wiki, more specifically the Space Law section. I'm sure a good number of people have looked at Space Law, or at least people know what it is. There are many crimes in there that have a bunch of ways of which they could be interpreted, but it is never interpreted IC.
Lets take a look at the medium crime, Narcotics Distribution, to distribute narcotics and other controlled substances. Some examples of narcotics in this game is the Ambrosia Vulgaris plant, chemist-made Space Drugs, and the oh-so powerful mind-breaker toxin. Like most drugs, they can give the spessmen a sense of euphoria, or outright horror. Distributing these drugs usually means some sort of trade, or just outright handing it out.
In some cases however, the dealer may feel slighted by a customer, who'll either rob the dealer and go on about their time, or rat said dealer to a security force. This happens in both real life, and the world of spessmens. Now of course, the dealer will want to get revenge, to the tune of aggravated assault, attempted murder, etc. They can either slip a lethal dose of lexorin/chloral into their next mix, or simply make a pill of lexorin, name it their drug, and lull their attacker into robbing them again, only for said attacker to die because his drug isn't what it was supposed to be.
To outside eyes, this can be seen as just desserts. To the heavenly Gods however, it can be seen as mindless murder, with no quarter being given in the punishment. Temporary, or even outright banishment to the outer worlds is common. Why, though? Why have the Gods decided to intervene on this matter, that could have easily been handled by a competent Security force? Trying to look from their point of view, it does seem mindless to gravely injure or outright murder another being just because they robbed you, but it also seems mindless to banish said person without letting it be handled by the denizens of the world.
There is a section of Space Law called capital crimes, which deals with evil acts such as murder, attempted murder, mutiny, and grand sabotage. There is even outright punishments such as execution, permanent imprisonment, and cyborgization. Why have this section if it will hardly ever be used in the world?
Now, the Gods have their reasons for banishing persons, mass murder without employment by the Syndicate is seen as mindless by the majority, an idea this investigator shares. When a regular old crew member, goes on a blood-fueled rampage across the station, there needs to be intervention, yes.
We can look at my case for an example. I was banished from the world for testing a couple of bombs in a few places. This should be an open and shut case. Grand Sabotage, execute him or throw him in the perma-brig, and move on. It wasn't murder, no one was hurt in said bombings. Couldn't access the test area for the bombs, and didn't have the access to do so. So this improvising, bored Atmosia Technician decided that if he didn't get caught, he could test the bombs in places where he didn't see people at, and checked to make sure no one was at.
What happened shortly after was the banishment to the outside world, and resorting to entering rather noxious worlds to live once more, something I did not enjoy.
Am I mad or vengeful over this banishment? Not at all, just made curious. A crime, fully explained in Space Law in not only the description, but of how to handle it is all right there: Bombing, arson, releasing viruses, deliberately exposing areas to space, physically destroying machinery or electrifying doors all count as Grand Sabotage.
Grand Sabotage/Murder/Attempted Murder.
This investigation is an outcry for maybe a little less intervention from the Gods, and just letting the denizens handle criminals as explained in the Holy Book of Space Law. Unless the crime is so outstanding and obvious, I personally do not believe intervention is needed at all.
